6:14 SPEAKER_06: No longer a little kid.

6:16 SPEAKER_06: He was going to become a teenager.

6:23 SPEAKER_00: 13 and 13 minutes.

6:25 SPEAKER_00: No sign of mom or dad.

6:27 SPEAKER_00: Again.

6:29 SPEAKER_00: Work, work, work.

6:31 SPEAKER_00: That's all they do.

6:33 SPEAKER_00: Probably even forgot what day it is.

6:35 SPEAKER_00: They're always so busy and don't even bother trying to spend time with me.

6:39 SPEAKER_00: They treat me like I'm invisible.

6:41 SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's a surprise.

6:43 SPEAKER_00: Like, they're pretending they'll forget.

6:45 SPEAKER_00: But I wake up tomorrow and boom! Balloons, cake, presents, pancakes with lots of maple syrup.

6:53 SPEAKER_00: Uh, too loud.

6:54 SPEAKER_00: 13.

6:55 SPEAKER_00: I'm officially a man.

6:57 SPEAKER_00: Let's see what they planned.

6:59 SPEAKER_06: Jake ran down the stairs, taking two at a time until he landed on the floor with a loud thud.

7:05 SPEAKER_00: Mom?

7:06 SPEAKER_00: Dad?

7:07 SPEAKER_00: Weird.

7:08 SPEAKER_00: No cake.

7:10 SPEAKER_00: No card.

7:11 SPEAKER_00: No note.

7:12 SPEAKER_00: Maybe.

7:13 SPEAKER_00: Maybe they went out to pick something up.

7:16 SPEAKER_06: After no sign of any birthday breakfast, no card, Jake decided to make a bowl of cereal, pack his lunch, and go to school before running late again.

7:26 SPEAKER_06: He was sure they'd announce his birthday over the intercom during the morning news, and all the other kids in his grade, who also had birthdays.

7:37 SPEAKER_06: He waited until the end, and was sure he was going to be called last.

7:42 SPEAKER_06: It was right after Cindy Mullins.

7:45 SPEAKER_06: But the bell just rang, and everyone just got up, gathered their backpacks and laptops, and went to their next class.

7:54 SPEAKER_06: Jake took the bus home and walked into the house.

7:57 SPEAKER_06: He called for his mom and dad, but nobody answered.

8:00 SPEAKER_06: He saw their note on the front on the refrigerator door, which simply said that they'd both be working late again and he could have leftovers.

8:08 SPEAKER_06: Jake reheated his dinner as he scrolled through TikTok, slowly just moving his food around his plate.

8:15 SPEAKER_06: He really wasn't very hungry.

8:17 SPEAKER_06: He cleaned up and went upstairs to get ready for bed.

8:20 SPEAKER_06: Jake got in bed and pulled the covers over his head.

8:23 SPEAKER_06: His eyes started swelling up with tears.

8:28 SPEAKER_00: I didn't have to deal with any of them.

8:30 SPEAKER_00: No parents, no bullies, no one.

8:33 SPEAKER_00: Just me.

8:35 SPEAKER_00: Alone forever.

8:37 SPEAKER_00: Yeah.

8:38 SPEAKER_00: That'd be perfect.

8:40 SPEAKER_00: Then I'd do whatever I wanted when I wanted to.

8:43 SPEAKER_00: That's my birthday wish.

8:45 SPEAKER_00: What a crappy birthday.

8:48 SPEAKER_06: And with that, he cried himself to sleep.

8:51 SPEAKER_06: Jake slept in till 9 a.m.

8:53 SPEAKER_06: since it was Saturday, and he didn't have shit to do.

8:57 SPEAKER_06: He called out for his parents.

8:59 SPEAKER_06: No answer, no surprise.

9:01 SPEAKER_06: He got dressed, went to the garage, and got out his bike.

9:06 SPEAKER_06: Jake rode his bike down the street as he turned up the volume on his headphones.

9:12 SPEAKER_06: Sabotage by the Beastie Boys was blaring in his ears.

9:15 SPEAKER_06: He pedaled fast, the wind blowing, the sun warming his face.

9:20 SPEAKER_06: As he biked, he began to notice that he wasn't seeing anyone outside.

9:25 SPEAKER_06: Nobody was cutting their grass or washing their cars.

9:30 SPEAKER_06: He also noticed that there were no kids playing or people walking their dogs.

9:35 SPEAKER_06: Usually by this time on Saturday morning, there are lots of people enjoying their day.

9:41 SPEAKER_06: Jake got off his bike and pushed the kickstand with his black converse.

9:47 SPEAKER_00: Okay.

9:48 SPEAKER_00: Where is everyone?

9:49 SPEAKER_00: No birds singing, no dogs barking.

9:52 SPEAKER_00: This is just fucking weird.

9:53 SPEAKER_00: Mrs.

9:54 SPEAKER_00: Hallie's porch lights are still on, but no sign of her.

9:57 SPEAKER_00: It's like they all vanished.

10:05 SPEAKER_00: Okay, Jake.

10:06 SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's a holiday.

10:07 SPEAKER_00: A town parade or something?

10:08 SPEAKER_00: They all have to be somewhere.

10:10 SPEAKER_00: Where the hell is everybody?

10:14 SPEAKER_06: Jake rode his bike downtown to the local mall.

10:17 SPEAKER_06: He still didn't see anyone.

10:19 SPEAKER_06: The cars were still in the parking lot, but no people in them.

10:23 SPEAKER_06: Shopping bags lay on the ground as the wind kicked up, blowing a Coca-Cola can down the street.

10:29 SPEAKER_06: The mall and stores were deserted.

10:31 SPEAKER_06: The only sound he could hear was his feet echoing on the mall floor.

10:36 SPEAKER_06: The mall escalator hummed endlessly, with no one riding it.

10:41 SPEAKER_06: Jake called out.

10:42 SPEAKER_06: He said hello and waited for an answer.

10:45 SPEAKER_06: He made his way to an empty arcade room.

10:48 SPEAKER_06: This place was always slamming on Saturday mornings.

10:51 SPEAKER_06: Video games rang out, sirens, and music filled the room.

10:55 SPEAKER_06: Jake walked behind the counter and filled a big soda cup up with game tokens and went straight for the tabletop Miss Pac-Man and plopped a quarter in.

11:07 SPEAKER_06: He played pinball, mini golf.

11:09 SPEAKER_06: There were no lines, no waiting, no other screaming kids.

11:13 SPEAKER_06: This was awesome, he thought.

11:28 SPEAKER_00: No alarms.

11:29 SPEAKER_00: No cops to say I'm stealing.

11:31 SPEAKER_00: I can have whatever I want, whenever I want.

11:33 SPEAKER_00: I think I really am alone.

11:36 SPEAKER_00: Is this because of what I wished?

11:42 SPEAKER_00: I'm the king of the world.

11:44 SPEAKER_00: I'm eating every type of cereal at once.

11:47 SPEAKER_00: Been three days, I think.

11:49 SPEAKER_00: I can stay up as late as I want.

11:51 SPEAKER_00: No bedtime, no school, no rules.

11:54 SPEAKER_00: I haven't seen the sun in a while.

11:55 SPEAKER_00: It's always cloudy now.

11:57 SPEAKER_00: But who cares?

11:58 SPEAKER_00: The sun just makes it hot out.

12:00 SPEAKER_00: This is the best birthday wish ever.

12:02 SPEAKER_00: Who needs anyone anyway?

12:04 SPEAKER_06: It's now been about one month since Jake's birthday wish.

12:08 SPEAKER_06: Still no people, no animals.

12:10 SPEAKER_06: He decided to go to the store to stock up on more Pop Tarts, pepperoni hot pockets, soda, and candy.

12:21 SPEAKER_00: No one to tell me what to do, no one to pick on me, but I hear things now, at least I think I do.

12:26 SPEAKER_00: Like whispers.

12:28 SPEAKER_00: Once I turned around, I swear someone was there.

12:32 SPEAKER_00: Another person.

12:33 SPEAKER_00: Waving to me, almost thought it looked like a kid.

12:36 SPEAKER_00: I waved back and said, Hey you, but then it was gone.

12:40 SPEAKER_06: Six months have now passed, and Jake is still alone.

12:44 SPEAKER_06: He grew tired of eating anything he wanted.

12:47 SPEAKER_06: His video games were boring and no interesting movies to watch.

12:51 SPEAKER_00: I thought I saw my mom the other day, just for a second, in the corner of the library.

12:55 SPEAKER_00: I ran toward her.

12:57 SPEAKER_00: She turned around and she didn't have a face.

13:00 SPEAKER_00: I think I'm going crazy.

13:02 SPEAKER_00: Losing my goddamn mind.

13:04 SPEAKER_00: I can't be the only one here.

13:05 SPEAKER_00: There's got to be someone else.

13:09 SPEAKER_06: Big sat on the rusted swing at the park and slowly swung back and forth.

13:13 SPEAKER_06: There was no crickets chirping, no birds.

13:16 SPEAKER_06: Just a stillness.

13:18 SPEAKER_00: I don't want to be alone anymore.

13:20 SPEAKER_00: Please, I didn't mean it.

13:22 SPEAKER_00: Please bring them back.

13:24 SPEAKER_00: I'll be better.

13:25 SPEAKER_00: I won't complain.

13:26 SPEAKER_00: I'll take the yelling.

13:27 SPEAKER_00: I'll take the bullies.

13:28 SPEAKER_00: I'll even settle with mom and dad working a lot.

13:31 SPEAKER_00: Just let me hear another voice again.

13:33 SPEAKER_00: I'm sorry.

13:36 SPEAKER_06: Jake heard a voice right next to him.

13:39 SPEAKER_00: Who's there?

13:40 SPEAKER_00: Hello?

13:41 SPEAKER_00: Wait, wait, who are you?

13:52 SPEAKER_00: I didn't mean it.

13:54 unknown: You're ours.

13:55 unknown: You're going to live to be a whole man alone until you die.

13:59 unknown: You'll go back.

14:00 SPEAKER_01: You won't be able to tell the difference between what is always real.

14:04 SPEAKER_02: April.

14:04 SPEAKER_02: Something I think.

14:06 SPEAKER_02: Today's my 18th birthday.

14:08 SPEAKER_02: I don't know what day it is anymore.

14:10 SPEAKER_02: I stopped counting.

14:12 SPEAKER_02: The sky stays gray now.

14:14 SPEAKER_02: The clocks don't move.

14:16 SPEAKER_02: Nothing grows.

14:17 SPEAKER_02: No animals.

14:18 SPEAKER_02: Still no people.

14:20 SPEAKER_02: I'm so tired of being alone.

14:22 SPEAKER_02: I saw my reflection today.

14:24 SPEAKER_02: It wasn't me.

14:25 SPEAKER_02: I've stopped showering and brushing my teeth.

14:28 SPEAKER_02: Haven't shaved in years.

14:30 SPEAKER_02: My eyes were bloodshot.

14:32 SPEAKER_02: Haven't been sleeping lately.

14:34 SPEAKER_02: My supplies are running low.

14:36 SPEAKER_02: Down to canned goods and dry stuff.

14:39 SPEAKER_02: With nobody to run the power and water, no electricity.

14:42 SPEAKER_02: So you can't keep your food refrigerated.

14:44 SPEAKER_02: I wish I never had a fucking birthday.

14:47 SPEAKER_02: I wish I was never born.

14:49 SPEAKER_06: Just then Jake felt a cold breeze on his face.

14:52 SPEAKER_06: It sent chills down his spine.

14:54 SPEAKER_06: He heard a whisper in his ear again, and it said, Your wish has been cracked, Jake.

15:04 unknown: Happy birthday.

15:07 SPEAKER_06: Jake then hunched over in pain.

15:10 SPEAKER_06: His head began to throb, and his insides felt like they were on fire.

15:15 SPEAKER_06: He looked at his hand which started looking transparent.

15:19 SPEAKER_06: He could actually see through his hand and saw the floor through it.

15:26 SPEAKER_02: hurts, what's happening here?

15:28 SPEAKER_02: This isn't what I wanted.

15:29 SPEAKER_02: I take it back.

15:32 SPEAKER_06: Then his hand disappeared entirely, followed by his feet working its way past his legs.

15:38 SPEAKER_06: He looked down and was seeing nothing.

15:41 SPEAKER_06: He began screaming.

15:42 SPEAKER_06: His whole body was just erasing itself.

15:45 SPEAKER_06: Now his torso was gone.

15:47 SPEAKER_06: Now just Jake's head was left.

15:50 SPEAKER_06: A tear ran down his cheek.

15:53 SPEAKER_06: Then his face.

15:54 SPEAKER_06: He was still screaming, and then nothing.

15:57 SPEAKER_06: That's the moment Jake Roth winked out of existence.

16:05 SPEAKER_03: Oh, poor little Jake.

16:09 SPEAKER_03: All he wanted to do was have a typical teenage birthday, cake and ice cream, presents, and friends to celebrate it with.

16:22 SPEAKER_03: But he wished to be alone and his wish was granted.

16:28 SPEAKER_03: So my friends, be careful for what you wish for.

16:34 SPEAKER_03: Because if something or someone hears you, you might just get your wish, and there's always a price to pay.
